An Open Letter to Indiana University (Regarding Their COVID Policies)

11

I am in protest of Indiana University’s COVID policies for the fall. This is my open letter to the University.

Petition:

You can find the whole script on my IU website.

Though I did not mention it in the video, I would like to thank all my close friends and connections who assisted me in making the letter, my voice, and my prose honest and incisive. In the interest of keeping their identities safe, I will simply say: you know who you are, and thank you.

I hope that there will be more discussion about these policies in the open air. If you seek to encourage such discussion, share this video. If you want to interact with me, please reach out to me at dasmish@iu.edu or leave a comment on this video.

Thank you for this! I just graduated from IU this past May and I stand with you and your message. This is very brave of you and you’ll find that what you think is the unpopular message, usually is the silent majority message. There are many of us that agree and IU is blindly following the political corruption policies that are happening across the country. Why? Because of FEAR. I applaud you!

It's not about your feelings about wearing a mask indoors. It's a requirement because Indiana's student body is large and the virus is spread very easily through the air when someone coughs or sneezes. If you are so opposed to this just stay home- there are plenty of online course options that don't require you to cough up your 'freedom' not to wear a piece of cloth so a classmate of yours isn't bedridden for two weeks coughing their lungs out.

Who knows what else is programmed in the app. They could do whatever they want. Where is the source code? Are they going to allow us to see what we are forced to download? Ashamed of my alma mater. If I was still there I would not be signing.

So, what's the point? You have any better idea other than that to stop spreading covid?

Thank you for the logical, honest, and open sharing of your views. It is obvious you feel strongly about this and were still able to articulate those beliefs without resorting to name calling or hatred. This is the type of dialogue so urgently needed today in this time of crisis. Too many people today are conditioned to throw out a derogatory insult or a label — judgments that are a sign of closed mindedness and a lack of critical thinking ability. I hope you find people willing to engage with you with the same level of professionalism. It would be interesting to see where that leads.

I don't agree with some of the words used to convey the message, but I do agree with most of them and the intended meaning of it all. It's too strong and harsh for them to absolutely require us to do these things, just as it is unlawful for police to threaten and punish a person to 'fess up' to a crime, when they're being arrested, without the presence of a lawyer.
